Parts of etiquette of sleeping
Narrated Jabir:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Extinguish the lamps when you go to bed; close your doors; tie the mouths of your water skins, and cover the food and drinks." I think he added, ". . . even with a stick you place across the container." Bukhari : 5625 and Muslim : 2020
While giving explanation of this hadith, Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen made below submissions :
In this hadith, there are etiquettes :it is imperative to protect and keep the children indoor at early time of the night (towards Magrib) and after this period (after sunset) they can be released to go out.
It also teaches us to close our door at night when we are about to sleep and we should say Bismillaahi while closing the door.
we should cover our utensils; cups, plates etc when it is night and say Bismillahi while doing this.
We should also switch off the latern or candle as this was what was being operated in the olden days and it was feared this thing might burn down the house and this is different what is being operated now as we are using lamps powered by electricity. We don't say it must someone switch off his light when he is about to sleep. However, the medical experts said the darker a room is the more it is convenient and comfortable for sleeping. On this note, if one deems it fit to switch off the lamps to make the sleeping goes well, this is good.
